Cindy Scott’s technical mastery of the voice and deep commitment to lyrical and musical expression have earned her loyal fans around the world. Originally hailing from Tupelo, Mississippi, Cindy Scott has lived a life steeped in all forms of American roots music, jazz, gospel, and southern soul. She came up in an extended family full of talented musicians and passionate educators, and was singing parts at the family jams from a very young age. Her earliest formal training was on classical flute, and she went on to earn her first college degree on a flute scholarship. She also plays guitar, bamboo flute, and hand percussion and is a composer and lyricist. She lived in New Orleans for many years, but now resides in Boston, where she teaches full-time at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
In her own words:
My parents were great musicians and teachers, and I learned by osmosis what it meant to do both well. It inspires me equally to perform an amazing concert and to help a student find the path to their greatest musical self. I believe that music is a bridge between people and a doorway to another side of consciousness, and its importance to the well-being of the individual and to society in general cannot be overstated.
I am particularly interested in the mechanics of the human voice. I like to think that I teach beyond the realm of genre, that the methods I impart give freedom, strength, tonal control, and, most of all, expressiveness to singers to use their voices in a healthy way in whatever style they choose to perform.
